Candidate for parliament: Hasan Huseynli (2005)

Photo & Text on November 20, 2005 by the Journalist Brendan Hoffman

A candidate for parliament from Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second-largest city. This man was brilliant, by far the best candidate we met. After the fall of the USSR, he worked for two years on a newspaper, one of the first, without pay (since no one had jobs – the country had fallen apart). The paper was successful enough that it got him a meeting with the country’s first president. He didn’t win this election but his main opponent outspent him 10 to 1. He has a Fulbright lined up to come to the U.S. and study university accreditation systems. (Brendan Hoffman)
